Don’t Blame China, Blame Your Budget
We’ve all had that one piece of furniture that gave up too soon. Maybe a shelf that buckled under your books, or a camp chair that collapsed at the wrong moment. Maybe the edging of the melamine peeled up like it was trying to grow ears, or the console rattled more than your car keys on a gravel road. And somewhere between the frustration and the fix, someone probably muttered: “Eish, Chinese stuff is junk.”
But here’s the thing—it’s often not fair, or even accurate, to blame China. Sometimes, it’s more about what it was made for—and how little someone was willing to pay to get it here.
Why “Made in China” Isn’t the Problem
China makes just about everything—from budget gadgets to some of the world’s most advanced electronics. The factories building R999 desks for pop-up shops are the same ones producing parts for Tesla’s, high-end drones, and tech your cousin still doesn’t believe exists.
It’s not about the country. It’s about the spec.
The Power of the Spec Sheet
As furniture importers (that’s us), we work with manufacturers to choose every detail: the wood type, thickness of the steel, strength of the welds, protective packaging—you name it. Want cheaper? You can spec it lower. Want better? You can build that too. The factory will give you what you ask for. It’s not personal. It’s just manufacturing.
The Catch with Chasing “Cheapest”
Here’s the tricky bit—when you’re shopping online, most product listings look pretty similar. A clean photo, a modern frame, and a price that feels like a win. But what you can’t see is what’s been quietly shaved off to hit that number.
Some suppliers have to drop their specs—thinner tops, cheaper boards, lighter steel, basic packaging—just to squeeze into that R1,000 to R1,200 zone South Africans love to hunt in. Side tables might be even lower. Now, if you’re getting a full console table or desk for around R1,200, you’re either really lucky (and someone’s taking a knock on margin), or, more often, you’re edging into poor quality territory.
And that’s when things start showing. The edging lifts like it’s growing ears, the top warps under a laptop, the frame rattles more than your Polo’s dashboard on a gravel road. On screen it looked like a steal. In real life, it can feel more like a swap-out waiting to happen.
Where We Try to Land
At Refined Spaces, we’re not chasing the cheapest. We’re also not trying to be high-end and exclusive. We’re just trying to hit that sweet spot—where you get something solid, good-looking, and practical without needing to sell your fridge to afford it.
We spec our stuff with care: thicker tops, better melamine, stronger frames, decent packaging. Not because we’re trying to be fancy—just because we know that furniture should last longer than a takeaway order.
The Real Question
So next time someone grumbles that “China makes junk,” it might be worth asking—what did you pay? Because in today’s market, you usually get exactly what you priced for.
We’re not perfect. But we’re building what we’d want in our own homes—one honest piece at a time.
